Writing Screener / Baseline Assessments

 Quarter 1 – Expository Writing (9 weeks)

Students will write expository texts focusing on organization and the writing process.

Suggested Resources

    • Writing Handbook (Orange section)
  • Grammar for Writing
  • Write Source 2000
  • Easy Grammar Daily Grams and Scientific Spelling.

Common Assessment: Expository Essay

  • Writing Prompt  (.doc file)
    • This is the common writing prompt for all 6th grade students.
  • Directed Writing Instructions for Students (.doc file)
    • The document contains instructions for how to write each aspect of the essay from title to conclusion.  It is framed as a discussion and is meant to be shared with the students.

Quarter 2 — Research (9 weeks)

Students will research information on teacher-selected topics, and organize their information into a formal research paper.

Quarter 3 – Persuasive & Literary Response (9 weeks)

Students learn and apply the elements of persusasion. Students will also read a novel and construct a response detailing literary elements.

Quarter 4 –Poetry/ Narrative (9 weeks)

Students will utilize figurative language in poetry. Students will also construct a personal narrative.
